The Previous Pilgrimages


THE NORTHERN EUROPEAN PILGRIMAGE -
VISITING BELGIUM, GERMANY, & SWITZERLAND
June 10 to 24, 2002

A visit to some of the Marian and other Catholic shrines in northern Europe. The path which previous pilgrims took to visit and pray at the shrines in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

This is a brief itinerary of the trip:

June 10 - Day One - Depart San Francisco to Brussels, Belgium.
Pilgrims departed from SFO or other USA cities to Brussels.

June 11 - Day Two - Arrive in Brussels

June 12 - Day Three - Brussels
Visited St. Michael, the Royal Palace, the imposing law courts (Palace of Justice), the Arch of Cinquantenaire, the Grand Palace and the bronze statuette, Mennke-Pis. Return to hotel.

June 13 - Day Four - Brussels: Beauraing, Banneux
Drove to Beauraing, a small village near the borders of France where the Virgin Mary revealed herself to the children. Prayed, made the Stations of the Cross and after Mass visited the cemetery and the tombs of the two children who witnessed the apparitions. Continued to Banneux where the Virgin Mary appeared to Mariette. Visited the Chapel of Apparitions, site where the Virgin Mary appeared and other places of the shrine. Returned to Brussels.

June 14 - Day Five - Brussels/Cologne: Aachen, Kevelaer

Left Belgium and traveled to Aachen, Germany to visit the world-renowned Cathedral. Continued to Our Lady of Kevelaer, which is recognized as one of the major Marian shrines in Central Europe. Proceeded to Cologne, one of the most romantic cities of Germany.

June 15 - Day Six - Cologne/Trier: Cologne
Visited the Cathedral of Cologne and its narrow, old streets, old town hall and the old palace Gurzenich. Drove along the Rhine River to Trier and visit the Relics of this period that include Constantine's Basilica, the Kaiserthermen (the Imperial baths) a huge amphitheater and the stupendous Porta Nigra, a gateway built from colossal blocks of stone.

June 16 - Day Seven - Trier/ Lucerne: Strasbourg

Drove to Strasbourg, host to the European Parliament, but it has another good reason to feel International: its border location makes it the place where Good French and German cultures most obviously coexist. The dual identity is evident in language, local cuisine and architecture. Visited the Notre Dame Cathedral built in 1439, which soars above the city. Nearby, the 16th century astronomical clock whirls into action each day at 12:30. Continued through Swiss villages and Switzerland's spectacular scenery to enchanting Lucerne.

June 17 - Day Eight - Lucerne: City sightseeing
Explored Lucerne and its environ. Balance of the day was used to browse charming Lucerne.

June 18 - Day Nine - Lucerne/Bregenz:Einsiedeln
Departed Lucerne for Bregenz. Drove along scenic Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug to Our Lady of Einsiedeln. Celebrated Mass at the Monastery of Einsiedeln. Continued to Bregenz located on the shores of Lake Constance.

June 19 - Day Ten - Bregenz/Innsbruck:Neuschwanstein Castle, Oberammergau, Absam Departed Bregenz for Hohenschwangau to visit King Ludwig's fabulous Neuschwanstein Castle, which was the inspiration for the Disneyland Castle. On to Oberammergau, site of the world famous Passion Play. Left Bavaria and enjoyed a scenic drive through the Alpine splendor of Austria to Our Lady of Absam. Continued to Innsbruck for overnight.

June 20 - Day Eleven - Innsbruck/Salzburg: Helbrunn Palace
Toured the colorful town of Maximillian and the Hapsburgs and proceeded to Salzburg. Visited Hellbrunn Palace. Transferred to our hotel.

June 21 - Day Twelve - Salzburg: Heiligenblut
Strolled through the heart of old Salzburg and visited Mozart's birthplace, now a museum. Continued through the midst of the breathtaking Alpine mountains to visit Heiligenblut Church to see the relic of the Holy Blood. After Mass returned to Salzburg.

June 22 - Day Thirteen - Salzburg/Munich: Altotting, city sightseeing
Departed Salzburg to visit Our Lady of Altotting - the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary and offer petitions to Jesus. After Mass, crossed Bavaria and drove to Munich, capital of Bavaria. Visited Glockenspiel on the Marienplatz, the former Royal Residence, Odeon Square with Theatiner Church, and the Hall of the Generals.

June 23 - Day Fourteen - Munich: City Sightseeing, Nymphenburg Palace.
Visited the center of town. Saw the Bavarian Parliament, Deutsches Museum, Royal Palace and the Opera House, the Hofbrauhaus; the medieval town gates and the colorful open air market. Passed the Olympic grounds on the way to the Palace of Nymphenburg, the former summer residence of Bavarian royalty and the gallery of King Ludwig I. A special farewell dinner was attended in our honor at a Bavarian Restaurant.

June 24 - Day Fifteen - Munich/San Francisco, USA
Following breakfast returned to San Francisco, USA.
