Stained Glass

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 25-26, 2009

Doing well here (Afghanistan), I’m one of three in a four-bed “B-hut,” which is a small bungalow built from plywood and two-by-fours.  It has a small swamp cooler, as does everything else inhabited in the camp, to keep things comfortable inside. On a base with a few thousand soldiers, I’m the only sailor.  There is also one Marine, so we keep each other company.

The unit I’m working with is 4th Infantry Division (even though I’m part of 82nd Airborne Division) and Task Force Mountain Warrior, so if you read anything about that in the papers you’ll know.                                                         Father Michael

Today’s second collection is for our St. Vincent de Paul Society.  Please help our volunteers help the needy of our own neighborhood.  Thanks for your generosity.

Happy Feast Day St. Victor’s Parish on Tuesday, July 28th!

St. Victor was a native of Africa and succeeded St. Eleutherius as Pope, about the year 189.  He opposed the heresies of that time and ex-communicated those who taught that Jesus Christ was only a man and not God.  He was involved in the controversy regarding the date of Easter and confirmed the decree of Pope Pius I, which ordered the Feast of Easter to be celebrated on a Sunday.  He ruled the Church for ten years.  His energy and zeal exposed him to persecutions for which he deserves the honors of a martyr, which are accorded him liturgically.  This Pope is named in the canon of the Ambrosian Mass and is said by St. Jerome to have been the first in Rome to celebrate the Mysteries in Latin.  He was formerly held in special veneration in Scotland for having sent missionaries there.  While we know little about him, we may reflect that it was through such people as St. Victor, that Christianity took root and has survived to be cherished by us some twenty centuries later.

PLEASE NOTE:  In honor of our Feast Day in addition to our daily 8:00 A.M. Mass, we will also be celebrating a Mass at 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 28th.  Please join us for a free, simple picnic/BBQ after the evening Mass, which will be provided by our Knights of Columbus.

Our 8:00 A.M. organist is with his family in Hungary for an extended time. If you play piano, organ, or other instrument, or if you love to sing and can read music, we would like to talk with you regarding serving as an accompanist or a cantor.  Please contact the Parish Office @ 251-7055 if you are able to help.

Health care reform should not include coverage for abortion on demand.  Please communicate with Congress and join our National Prayer Campaign.  For details and a copy of the requested prayer, please see .

APOSTOLIC CATHOLIC CHURCH - A Message From Our Diocesan Offices

There is some confusion regarding the status of the “Apostolic Catholic Church,” which operates in San Jose at “Our Lady of Hope Parish” on North White Road.  This church and parish are not Roman Catholic and they are not in union with the Holy See. Catholics should not participate in the liturgies of this church; nor should they go to the parish for sacramental preparation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Marriage) or celebration of these sacraments.

Filipiniana Dinner Dance

The Fil-Am Association cordially invites you to their Filipiniana Dinner Dance on Saturday, August 1st, in the Parish Hall from 6:30 P.M. to midnight.  This is an annual fund-raising event chaired by Dan & Thelma Boac (258-6276) for the benefit of St. Victor’s Church.  Come and enjoy a night of a sumptuous catered buffet dinner, entertainment and dancing to the music of Joe Alvarez.  For ticket information, please call the Parish Office @ 251-7055, or ask any Fil-Am member.

Catechetical Ministry (CM) registration will be held Thursday & Friday, September 10th & 11th, from 4:00-8:00 P.M., Saturday, September 12th, from 9:00 A.M.-3:00 P.M. and Sunday, September 13th, from 8:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M. in the parish center.  All those who will be signing-up their student(s) to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation (Confession), First Eucharist (Communion) or Confirmation must bring an original or a copy of their child’s BAPTISMAL certificate. It’s always good practice to bring the original or a copy, even if you think you may have given it to us already, as no student will be registered for their Sacraments if we do not have one on record.  No exceptions will be made.  We will not keep your original, however, we will keep all copies given.

Please remember: If you are registering someone else’s student(s) for CM Classes (i.e., niece, nephew, grandchild, friend), you MUST have written permission from the parent along with a COMPLETED Emergency Form/Family Agreement Form for each student.  In this particular case, no student will be registered without permission or completed forms. [For your convenience, you may print the form from our Website, .  Please scroll down to CM handbook and open it.  The “Emergency Form” and “Family Agreement Form” are near the end of the handbook.  Print as many as needed for the amount of students you have. ]

A NOTE TO ALL REGISTERING FAMILIES: All emergency forms MUST be complete, as this is now considered a “Diocesan” registration form.  Please do NOT leave any blanks.  Bring all your information (doctor numbers, dentist numbers, current emergency contact info) with you.

PLEASE NOTE: The new U.n.I. Lord (teens and young adults) email address is: .
