Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion - April 4-5, 2009

                                                     From the Pastor’s Pen

Included with this week's bulletin are materials necessary to pray the Divine Mercy Novena and Divine Mercy Chaplet.  The latter is prayed after each 8:00 AM daily Mass (in conjunction with the Rosary) by a dedicated group of parishioners.  The Divine Mercy devotion comes from Poland and spread worldwide under the reign of Pope John Paul II.  Both novena and chaplet are easy to learn and suitable for children and adults alike.  The novena begins Good Friday and will be prayed by many in our parish.  The parish will have a public recitation of the chaplet on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 19, following the 12:15 Mass.

Father Michael Hendrickson

Please see today’s important letter (insert) from our pastor, Father Michael.

Today’s second collection is for St. Victor’s Development Fund.  This fund assists with the never-ending repairs and projects on the parish grounds.  Thank you for your generosity.

Growing In Faith Together

We may all take pride that St. Victor’s continues to be a leader in the Annual Diocesan Appeal pledge drive.  It’s never too late to send in your pledge, if you haven’t done so.  Join a winning team during this final week!  All pledges now benefit St. Victor’s directly.  {Watch our progress on the ADA charts around the Church.}  For those of you who have ALREADY PLEDGED, please wait for your statements from the Diocese and mail your payments directly to the Diocese, as the bookkeeping is done at their office.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND SUPPORT.

THANKS to all of volunteer phone callers.  We appreciate your help.

Your Friend, the Codicil

You can easily change your will to benefit St. Victor’s Parish.  All you need to do is have a codicil that adds to or modifies something in your will.  Codicils are effective, inexpensive and easy.

If you want to know more about this, the Diocese can provide free assistance.  Call Robert Serventi @ 983-0168, or write to him at: 900 Lafayette St., Suite 301 , Santa Clara , CA 95050 .

Donations for the Altar Society Flowers may be made in our EASTER FLOWER envelopes located on the tables around the Church and in the vestibule.  Your contribution will help defray some of the expenses used for beautifying the Church at this time of the year.  Please place these envelopes in the collection basket, or drop them by the Rectory Office.  Thank you.

$CRIP gift certificates will be available after Masses this weekend, April 4th & 5th, (except for Sunday 7:00 and 8:00 A.M. Masses) for all of your Easter holiday shopping, dining and gift-giving needs.  Please call the School Office @ 251-1740 for more information about the $CRIP program.

The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence for everyone 14 years or older.  That means NO MEAT.  {Good Friday, April 10th, is a day of fast and abstinence.  That means only one full meal for those 18 to 59 and no meat for anyone 14 years or older.}  The faithful should not excuse themselves lightly from these observances.

Lenten Reminders: All the faithful, after they have participated in First Communion, are obliged to share in Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday). Guidelines for reception of Communion are printed on the inside front cover of our Missals. The faithful who are old enough to understand that they have sinned are obligated to confess serious sins at least once a year.  It is recommended that venial sins also be confessed.

Please check your local cable listings for the special EWTN broadcasts of Pope Benedict XVI’s Holy Week services.

CATECHETICAL MINISTRY is looking for those who are interested in sharing their faith, time and talents with our Junior High and High School students. This is a weekly commitment for Junior High and twice a month for High School Confirmation students.  Please prayerfully consider this most important ministry.  (Training is provided.) For more information, please contact Sharron Hollenbeck or Angela Giampaoli in the Catechetical Ministry Office @ 251-0165.

Our Love And Prayers Go Out To...

St. Victor’s Parish Community would like to extend their sympathy and prayers for the family and friends of Stephen B. Strawbridge, who recently passed away.

The Altar Society offers parishioners an opportunity to provide flowers for our Sanctuary as a memorial or tribute gift.  It might be in memory of a deceased loved one, in thanksgiving, or to commemorate a birthday, baptism, marriage, anniversary, etc. In return for a minimum $100.00 gift, the Altar Society will arrange for the floral display on the date(s) specified and will see that an acknowledgment appears in the Parish Bulletin for the corresponding week.  For more information or to order this floral service, please call the Parish Office @ 251-7055.

Bulletin advertisers needed

Why not let parishioners know about your business or service while helping the parish at the same time?  St. Victor’s currently has space available for new bulletin advertisers.  Please call the Parish Office @ 251-7055 for more information.  THANK YOU to those who already advertise with us – you make our Sunday bulletin possible!

For applications or information regarding St. Victor’s School, please call 251-1740 or visit .

Donations to the Church may be made monthly by credit card or checking account transfers.  Parish Pay is now available at St. Victor’s.  You may access the web site @ and click on DONATE or call toll-free @ 1-866-727-4741 and give them the information over the phone.  If you have any questions, you may also call Alice at the Parish Office @ 251-7055.

BINGO – St. Victor’s Parish Hall on Friday, April 17th.  Doors Open at 5:00 P.M. Please see today’s bulletin insert for all the details!

SPRINGTIME BRUNCH & AUCTION – will be held on Sunday, May 3rd, from 10:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M. in the Parish Hall (Registration – 10:00 A.M., Buffet – 10:30-11:30 A.M., Silent Auction begins at opening and Live Auction begins at 11:30 A.M.)  Buffet Tickets are Pre-Sales only [$35.00 per couple & $20.00 per individual].  For more information, please call the School Office @ 251-1740.

FOR SAFETY SAKE.  For your safety as well as the safety of others, we ask your cooperation with St. Victor’s, the Police Department and the Fire Department by parking in designated areas only.   We especially need the fire lanes to be left open and clear. (You may be ticketed!)  As a courtesy to others, we ask you to follow traffic signs in and out of the parish grounds.  Please also obey the posted signs – Speed Limit of 5 miles per hour - when driving on the parish grounds.  We hope those few traffic rules will help keep everyone safe, and smooth any traffic flow problems we may have.

THE GOOD ORDER OF THE HOUSE OF GOD – If there are pews open, please come and have a seat for Mass.   Standing around the Church is very distracting to our priests, lectors and other parishioners. Our ushers provide a very welcome service at our celebrations of the Eucharist.  Please assist them if they ask for your help and cooperation. Please help to keep the Church and the surrounding area neat and clean.  At the end of Mass you can help by replacing your Music books and Missalettes in the pew racks and by taking your bulletin home with you for handy reference. Please do not chew gum in or around the Church.  Dispose of chewing gum in a trash receptacle not on the ground or under the pews. There is a CRYING ROOM available for young children with room for one parent.  Out of respect for the priest and courtesy to others, please arrive at Mass on time and remain in your pews until the priest has left the Church.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Get on the Bus is a program that will take over 1000 children from cities throughout the state to visit their mothers in prison (Chowchilla, Ventura and Corona , CA and Ontario , Canada ) on May 8th.  This is free transportation for the children and their caregivers.  This program is sponsored by our Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  Financial donations are needed.  Please call Sister Noreen Driscoll, CSJ, at the Rectory Office (251-7055) for more information.

Needy Families - Our St. Vincent de Paul volunteers are working with several families in need of twin beds.  If you are able to help, please call the Rectory Office @ 251-7055.

Mount St. Joseph Carmelite Monastery Benefit Dinner - will be held on Sunday, May 3rd, from 2:00-6:30 P.M. at the Holiday Inn (N. First St. at Hwy 101).  You are invited for a delicious dinner, music, door prizes, silent auction and raffle, all for the cost of $60.00 for adults and $30.00 for children under 12.  The Carmelites will be selling their Raffle tickets after the 8:00, 9:15 and 10:45 A.M. and 12:15 P.M. Masses on Sunday, April 19th.  Please support the Carmelites who come and help us here at St. Victor’s.  If you have any questions, please call 251-1361.

Everyone is invited to the Immigration Forum, which will be held by Congressman Mike Honda on Saturday, April 18th, from 6:30-8:00 P.M. in the parish hall.  This meeting falls under the auspices of the Catholic Coalition of Immigration Reform (headed by Father Jon Pedigo) and backed by the Diocese of San Jose.
